Nullohm has togheter with he craftsmen of Prototyper AS, Bolt, Apart and Hydrolift created for the artists Fredrik & Martin Raddum an impressive large piece of lighting furniture.  Situated in the park and of a neighborhood with the name Haugenstua, -that if translated would be something like ” the living-room on the hill”. The measures are impressive nine meters high and four wide. And we had to used norways largest mobile crane to mount it…

Our client, ADB Architects has on behalf of Senatsverwaltung für Stadtentwicklung been in charge for the total rehabilitation of this great monument in the heart of Berlin. Viktoria has even gotten her self a new dress in real gold leaf, and is probably more proud than ever.

Our contribution will be the construction and delivery of a pair of “Dobpler” LED walls, using our new digital Mnemosyne technology in the underground pedestrian tunnels  leading to the monument . The installation will create not only energy saving light on demand for the visitors in the narrow corridors, but also excitement and well-being with its responsive light design.

The Mnemosyne is in comparison with the original analog Dobpler circuit a more versatile system when it comes to interaction possibilities, and is the final result of long time development into a product with a high quality PCB (made in Norway) for rational assembly and modularity. The complete system has high corrosion resistance for a long lifespan, and fulfilling the strict building codes for a public entrance area.

The two walls will be 10.8 meters long, built in Stainless steel and tempered glass with a thickness of only 80 mm. Each wall contains 8640 LEDs with 6500 lumen and  a Kelvin of 5500-7500. The custom made super efficient power-supplies from Vicor provides a total of 24 KW for each wall, while the actual consumption for standby light is calculated to be around 100 w + 30 watt per person walking by.

But that´s not all.  We have also designed a custom skylight for the tunnels, clearly marking the cross section with a impressively cascade of light, a light that is a synthetic recreation of the actual sky right above. A Red-Green-Blue-White (RGBW) LED light of 960 watt, feed by eight sensors for each sky direction. Controlled by Arduino, driving the LEDs with our new and very exiting powerful LED drivers. Built with a stainless steel casing the installation is bearing the fitting title Der Himmel über as a tribute to the classical Wim Wenders film (english title Wings of Desire)  that made the Viktoria monument an icon of Berlin

Planned finalization for both projects is mid September 2011.

The collaboration with Bifokal has finaly ended in an exhibition. The sonomorph system, kinectic response to sound will be shoved at Atleri Nord, in Oslo 17-19 of june.

Nullohm has been invited to participate in this summers exhibition «Frontiers of Architecture III-IV LIVING» at Louisiana Museum of Modern Art (Copenhagen, Denmark).

We will participate with a 9 m2 Dobpler wall, which is identical to the installation we did in cooperation with Snøhetta in Sandnes, Norway, in 2008. Dobpler is a soft and extremely energy efficient «Light on Demand System» with an simple interaction that creates joy, visibility and attention. A preventive effect on negative behavior in public space, or simply ment as a inspiring attraction.

The system consists of modules that connects together to build whole interactive walls, either as covered area or spread out as lines or mosaica The system has a unique sensor technology that detects people motion as glowing shadows without the use of complicated technical installations. It is maintenance free and a simple to implement in architecture. Since 2008, the installation in Sandvika and the technology used has received international media coverage in architecture and design media. Since then we have developed a new generation system called «Mnemosyne», offering more interactive possibilities that can be tailor made for different projects.

This exhibition is a presentation of a classic, pioneering work, in interactive/narrative LED lighting for permanent use within architecture

Frontiers of Architecture III-IV LIVING
1. June – 2. October 2011

The Louisiana’s exhibition series Frontiers of Architecture I-IV, which the museum has been showing in the years 2007-2011, uses architecture’s deployment of other disciplines to illustrate the new movements and paths that are shifting the frontiers of architecture. With its overall theme LIVING, the last exhibition in the series, combining nos. III and IV and filling half the total exhibition space of the museum, turns the spotlight on the question “How does the Good Life look today?”
The exhibition highlights the tendencies and new departures facing architecture in a world of increasing globalization. How are the individual, the community and social relations conceived today? What do people dream about, and how do they live out these dreams, which are constantly expanding human notions of life styles and spaces for living?
Traditional family structures, urban structures and life modes are being challenged by new kinds of technology and communication as well as increased mobility. The exhibition LIVING focuses on architecture’s partnerships with human sciences like anthropology and sociology. These softer, less quantifiable sciences come to expression in the exhibition through crossovers between architectural projects and art installations and glimpses of current ‘case stories’ from various parts of the world where social development has created new dwelling styles.
The first two exhibitions in the series were Frontiers of Architecture I – Cecil Balmond: The Hidden Order and Frontiers of Architecture II – Green Architecture for the Future.

Togheter we will work on the realization of their artistic project Of Two, an interactive light installation planned for the Simone de Beauvoir footbridge in Paris as well on other venues. For Nullohm this is the perfect setting to se the full interactive capabilities of our lately developed system Resonance. A development work that has partially received funding from Innovation Norway and The Art council of Norway.

We always bring some gadgets, like the first LED lamp we made in 2005, the Can of Light, maybe a pair of Russian night googles, or even a fire piston made here in the workshop to light the fire (the flint method is preferred thou)

Last time we had a round up of all the Troll-stories we knew, and those are someone you don´t wanna meet…

Gaute (one of our creative sparring partners from the design firm Uredd) told us about the old norse tradition of hammering in a piece of steel above the entrance door to protect the household from Tusser, Trolls and other unwelcome representatives from the underground. A phenomena still seen today in most Norwegian farms in the shape of a horseshoe above the doors.

We were discussing the origin of this tradition. Its believed that the steel itself was considered to have some magic properties. But steel items from those days are mostly rusted completely away. Bronze on the other hand last longer. And there has been found some fantastic bronze items that was really advanced machines, like the Antikythera

Since nullohm are realists we find the theory about “magic properties of steel” a little bit off. Its seems more likely that the object above the door were functional devices, and since all the stories says that barns and houses were full of nisser and other creatures of small size it seemed like the mechanism did not repeal the smaller annoyances (like Vettes pissing in the beer keg and nisseknuter made in children’s hair when they slept etc).

A plausible theory is that the mechanism was targeting Trolls, not only because they are big, -they are also big trouble. Where my family comes form there are the story about Risegygra ( A small female troll) that was so strong  that she attempted to drag  the not so small island Helgebostad onto the shore with a rope. Since no rope is strong enough for such a task she fall on her behind, and still today you can see the large imprint in the mountain rock shaped as her ass.

So a bell mechanism tuned into a resonance effect (well known among instrument makers) could perhaps make an alerting sound when the condition were right. And what are those conditions? Large creatures shakes the ground. And since trolls are the only big creature out there walking on two feet´s its only a matter of detecting the properties of the gait to distinct it from elks, bears and so.

Since we don´t know much about resonance and bells, but plenty of accelerometers and circuits.,- its time to design the Troll-detector 1.0 (just to be on the safer side when leaving for the forrest..)
